On a somewhat wild hair, we went to a small town in Kentucky to see their Christmas parade. The candy flew by the handfuls and the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves despite the cold and windy conditions. Hats, gloves, and multiple layers of clothing were certainly a requirement – many families were even wrapped in blankets as this night-time parade wound it’s way through this small town’s streets.
Police sirens marked the beginning of the parade. There’s just something about the pride and excitement of your town’s police and fire departments leading the parade with full lights and sirens going that just announces to the world “Here comes the parade, everyone get excited!”. Too many towns have banned the use of the sirens in parades, declaring them as noise that is a nuisance – bah Humbug – let ‘er rip – and mind your own business you fuddy duddies. You won’t think they’re such a nuisance when you need them – now will you? (Sorry I digress, this is something of a trigger issue for me. I think a town parade is the perfect place to honor the dedication and love these brave police and firemen give to their community all year. How fun for them to blow the horns and sirens and have people cheer them – how dare anyone interfere with such a grand tradition.)

Whether building websites or making artwork, it always amazes me what can inspire greatness. The colors of a piece of fabric can suddenly lead to a modern looking website, the eyes of a thrift store find can solve how to fashion eyes for your latest creation, or maybe you see something and think – hmm, that gives me an idea.
If you’re like me; you ponder the possibilities, walk away, and promptly forget the inspiration and the item that created it.

There’s a somewhat new craft related website called Ravelry. According to their homepage, it looks to be a great resource to:
organize – “organize your projects, stash, needles, and more”
share – “Show off you work. Share your ideas and techniques.”
discover – “Find new designs & yarns. Make friends. Try new things.”
All of these things are near and dear to those of us in the yarn and thread Crafting Community. This site appears to be taking the great success of Wist and the numerous craft forums and blending everything into one giant resource of a website.
What makes this site so interesting, beyond what it offers to crafters, is how they are creating a huge buzz by limiting access.

The war to end all wars. If only those strong words uttered at the end of World War I had been true.
It is perhaps on Veteran’s Day more so than any other day of the year that we as a family shed our tears for our beloved veteran. His service came during World War II with the OSS and it left him with scars physical and mental he wore his entire life. His death in 1999 let him accept his final duty to guard the gates of heaven – he was a proud US Marine of course.
While listening to our local talk radio talk show, who was in their second day of honoring our active duty and veteran soldiers (the first day was Friday) another listener mentioned a website where the idea is to create a Soldier’s Wall of photos of the wonderful men and women who currently serve, have been killed in action, or previously served.
The site is a giant photo album of proud men and women in uniform and who are being honored by friends and family. It gladdens my heart that there are so many young people out there that are willing to serve and know exactly what they are serving for. There’s also a forum where family members, members of the military and friends can share information and ideas.
The site is: The Soldiers Wall

It’s so very tempting. Drop that link, stuff a signature, or spam people’s blogs. But, when does something migrate from promotion to shameless plug and should we even worry about if it does?
First let me define how I see the terms promotion and shameless plug as variations on a theme.
To me, promotion is when you tell someone about your product, service, or website. Promotion in most cases is synonymous with advertising.
A shameless plug on the other hand is a form of promotion that somehow takes advantage of a situation to push your product, service or website.
The question is, “Is there really such a thing as a shameless plug anymore or has society just come to accept them more than they did in the past?”
