In a move that is perhaps greatly overdue, I’ve finally added a category to Crafty Tips that celebrates the artists and crafters who work with recycled items. These green and crafty folks take things that we would normally discard and create something beautiful, functional and even wearable!

One of my favorite websites that shares projects and patterns about recycled crafting is called My Recycled Bags. As the name implies, this blog is all about recycling bags to create even more functional and useful items. Cindy, the crafter and artist behind this site, provides step by step instructions to make your own recycled crafts that often use plastic bags and old denim.

plastic bag braceletHer latest project and my personal favorite is a Recycled Plastic Cuff Bracelet Pattern made from “plarn”. Plarn is yarn made from plastic bags. Don’t know how to make yarn from those old grocery store or bread bags? Not to worry, her site has a super easy to follow tutorial on how to make your own.

Along with plastic bag crafts, Cindy also shares great ideas for crafting with cassette tapes, VCR tapes and even lettuce netting. I first added her blog to Crafty Tips back in 2007 so you know there’s tons of great stuff to be found on her site.

Now you can also find her site listed in the new category Recycled Art!

The past few days have brought a flurry of small changes to my craft directory. Some were long over due and others were the result of recent submissions.

Great Blogs By Crafters

Today’s submissions to Crafty Tips brought a great blog, Lenox Knits that is maintained by a wonderful knitter. Problem is that along with knitting, she also talks about life, yarn, SEO, travel, chickens and a whole host of other things. Her posts are quite engaging and while the vast majority are relating to crafting as one of her other visitors said, perhaps we should classify similar blogs as “lives of crafters”.

Buried over on Crafty Tips was a rarely visited category where I had intended to list blogs like that. Looking at the traffic stats, the blogs listed there were not receiving the traffic they truly desired. Changes were in order and while they took a little longer than I would have hoped (doesn’t everything anymore), I moved the existing listings and Lenox’s to a new Craft Blogs category that will be linked to from every page of the site.

Hopefully, these multi-dimensional craft bloggers will now see my URL in their site logs more often.

There does seem to be something about crafters that make us interesting people. I think it’s more than just about being creative – there’s just something different about our personalities too. We seem to have more interests than most people and family seems to be extra important to us.

Jewelry Designers & Artisans

Jewelry also seems to be very important to crafters; it is one of the busiest categories on Crafty tips and the jewelry websites category was the largest of the entire website. Submissions this week would have created the need for a 4th and 5th page in the category; something I did not want to do. After all, the poor folks on those last pages would be unlikely to see many visitors.

I’ve been putting off a listing audit for months now and thought the jewelry category might be the perfect one to start with. So after visiting all of the sites and deleting any that were abandoned or discontinued, I was still left with 32 great sites – still too many to leave all in one grouping.

Last fall I had asked other crafters what they thought would be a good classification for jewelry artists who made the components that they make jewelry from and most considered artisan jewelry as the best description. All these months later, Crafty Tips at last has an Artisan Jewelry category. There are currently three very talented jewelry artists that have shared their jewelry making tips and would love for folks to visit their sites.

The other obvious category choice was Beaded Jewelry. Visiting all of these talented folks websites for a second time reminded me just how much I love beaded jewelry and am in awe of some of the bead artists out there.

A number of jewelry designers create pieces that didn’t really fit in either of the new categories or could have been listed in both of them. Those great jewelry websites remain in the primary jewelry category.

So, I’ve been deleting old non-working links and moving things around a bit. Hopefully, it will make things easier to find and will help more crafters promote their websites.

infant portrait One of the most fun things about searching for vintage illustrations to add to Reusable Art is when I discover a wonderful artist with whom I am unfamiliar with.

This week brought one such discovery, Ida Waugh. Her specialty? Wonderful portraits and illustrations of young children and infants.

Yahoo! is jumping into the social networking game with Yahoo! Buzz. Bloggers across the Internet are sharing their thoughts and wondering if this is indeed a competitor for Digg.

Many are asking if Buzz will be another place to promote their blogs and others wonder if it just another copycat site of the hugely popular Digg.

What’s Hot

This is where I see bloggers getting the most benefit from Buzz. It seems like this site has attracted members similar to Digg. Of all of the categories that I looked at, only about two of the articles displayed were not from major news sites, huge information portal sites, or otherwise well-known sites. This would provide bloggers with information about what people are talking about RIGHT NOW.

Personally, I would rather use Google Trends which is purely based upon the number of searches being made for up to 100 phrases.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Yahoo! and much of what they stand for as a company. But, using current searches as a basis for what’s hot just seems more reliable than what members have Dugg or Buzzed.

Though I must admit when I looked at both sites while writing this blog post, they both listed Stephanie Tubbs Jones (the poor woman who suffered a brain aneurysm earlier today) in the number one position. Number two on Google was “aneurysm” and Yahoo! Buzz had “Christina Applegate”. Which of the number twos do you think more people are actually talking about today?

Small Bloggers

It would seem from my looksee today that lesser-known bloggers would be unlikely to rank well on Yahoo! Buzz. The focus on “news” makes Buzz more about what is coming off the AP and Reuters’ news wires than actual conversations about that news. Seems Buzz, like Digg, is more about who can find the latest news off the wire services first rather than what people are actually finding interesting.

I have twice managed to write posts on Blog About Crafts that vaulted to the front page of Digg and hopefully the overwhelming predominance of sites like the New York Times, Yahoo!’s own news pages, and huge sites carrying household names will level out as more bloggers find the site. I suspect there will be those exceptionally written and thoughtful everyman blog posts that will do well on the site and I hope that as the site matures there will be more opportunity for those posts to be recognized.

Social Networking?

If I want to know the news, I go to Yahoo! or any of the other news outlets directly. What I’m looking for on blogging sites and social networking sites is how bloggers think a particular news item could impact their personal or business life; not a reprint of the original news story. It’s the opinions that make blogs so very interesting.

The top Buzzed story while I was writing this post had over 160 Buzz Ups and not a single comment. Not much social about that.
