Have you seen this? Woman Sues Best Buy For $54 Milliion!
To make a long story short, a customer brought her laptop in for repairs and it took Best Buy 6 months and at least a dozen phone calls to finally admit that not only did her machine never leave the store, someone stole it. Best Buy did after numerous phone calls offer her a $900 gift card – $200 less than what she paid for the computer and the extended warranty. It went downhill from there and now she’s suing in a large way to the tune of $54 million.

You just got a windfall of crafting supplies. A friend of a friend knows you craft and a bag or box of goodies has found its way to your workshop. But, what to do when the mystery items are unmarked or the labels are suspicious in their validity?
Such a dilemma came up for a crafter on one of the major craft forums. She had purchased some lovely beads on eBay and now that they were in her hands she was not sure of their authenticity. The beads were beautiful and the price wasn’t too bad whether the beads were ‘real’ or not. The crafter wondered if she should only use the beads for friends and family or if she could use the beads in her commercial pieces.

Are you underselling yourself and breaking your contract? It’s so easy to do and you might not even realize that you are doing it. When you have a piece in a gallery, under consignment, or in a craft mall; do you sell it on your own website or in person too? Do you charge the same price that the gallery, consignment or craft mall does? If not, you could be asking for trouble.
If a gallery has your art dolls priced at $150 each and you sell them on your website for $100 – who loses? You do of course. Even though a gallery sale may only net you $75 – that is the wholesale price – not the retail price. If the retail price is $150, why should you sell them for 33% off? Are you punishing the folks who buy from the gallery? Won’t anyone who buys from the gallery feel cheated? Do you think they are apt to buy any more of your dolls?

Came across an interesting article on Domain Names and Branding. The author makes reference to a recent article in Inc. Magazine that discusses the battle between two small companies and two giant companies who have branded similar sounding domain names.
The original article mainly talks about the legal issues involved and does tend to make the corporate giants appear in the wrong (I agree); but, it fails to discuss how others can learn from what happened and avoid having to fight a David and Goliath type struggle to retain their company’s identity and branding.
Be sure to check this article out before making your next domain name purchase. A little extra expense early on will ensure this doesn’t happen to you.

It absolutely drives me crazy when I have to beg for information about a business. Whether online or off, when I buy something I want to know if I can return or exchange it. This is particularly true when the item is sized, has multiple parts, or requires electric or batteries to make it work.
Many crafters and artisans seem to avoid talking about returns and exchanges. I guess some are hoping if they don’t talk about refunds and exchanges, their customers won’t ask for one?
